Background. Contemporary popular culture operates within the context of postmodern and postsecular transformations that reshape the nature of cultural communication, the role of the audience, and the mechanisms of meaning production. Entertainment, traditionally associated with leisure and pleasure, is increasingly viewed as a form of participatory culture and social interaction. The study aims to conceptualize entertainment as a space of meaning-making in contemporary popular culture and to analyze cultural practices in which entertainment acquires ritual, communicative, and identity-forming significance.
Methods. The study employs several methods to address the research problem: the systems approach to examine entertainment as an element of popular culture in the postmodern era; the dialectical method to analyze cultural processes and phenomena in their development and interconnection; the inductive method to generalize processes that define the characteristics of entertainment in popular culture; and the comparative method to identify conceptual differences between various cultural approaches to the role of entertainment in contemporary popular culture. The analysis also draws on postmodern theory, the concept of the sacralization of everyday life, and theories of participatory culture.
Results. Entertainment in contemporary popular culture structures everyday life, shapes patterns of behavior and identity, supports the emergence of communities, and provides new forms of cultural communication. The study demonstrates that entertainment practices – from digital content to festival events – create a new cultural space that integrates individual experiences, networked interactions, and collective meaning-making. Based on the analysis, the article offers a definition: entertainment in popular culture is a form of participatory culture that combines symbolic engagement, pleasure, and creativity.
Conclusions. Entertainment in contemporary popular culture should be understood as an important meaning-making mechanism that extends beyond leisure. In the digital age, entertainment becomes a space of dialogue, creative participation, and symbolic self-expression, with the audience acting as an active co-creator of cultural meanings. This perspective allows entertainment to be considered not as a peripheral phenomenon but as one of the central categories of contemporary popular culture.
